Prominent businessman: Rep. Lynch would make strong mayoral candidate

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A major behind-the-scenes player in Boston says Rep. Stephen Lynch should consider a run for mayor.

FOX 25's Sharman Sacchetti spoke with Suffolk Construction CEO and Chairman John Fish at an event Wednesday. Fish told Sacchetti he feels Rep. Lynch would make a strong candidate in the race to become Boston Mayor Tom Menino's successor.

"I haven't talked to him directly," says Fish. "My sense is if he decided to run for mayor he'd make a very strong candidate. I think the field is shaping up right now. I think that Steve, if he decided that this was something that was important to him and his family, I think he'd do very well at it."

Fish feels the Democratic congressman's combination of knowledge of the city and experience would make him a good candidate.

The prominent businessman also said that the next mayor has to show up in a different set of shoes than Mayor Menino, calling the longtime mayor the "gold standard."

While his name has been tossed around by political experts as a potential mayoral candidate, Rep. Lynch has repeatedly said he is not interested in serving as mayor.

Shortly after Mayor Menino announced he would not seek another term, Sharman Sacchetti asked the congressman if he'd run for mayor if he lost to his Democratic rival in the special election for U.S. Senate.

"I'm going to win the primary," Lynch confidently responded.

One day later, Rep. Lynch released a statement saying he will not be a candidate for mayor.
