Group to host telethon for Mass. GOP Sen. hopeful

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - A tea party-aligned group that is supporting Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Michael Sullivan is planning a weekend telethon to raise $50,000 to help expand its radio and television advertising campaign.

A spokesman for the Conservative Campaign Committee said the first goal of the Reno, Nev., fundraising event is to get two radio ads they've produced onto more stations.

The ads target Sullivan's GOP rivals Daniel Winslow and Gabriel Gomez.

The group is also hoping to finish a television ad and have it running before the April 30 primary.

The group's spokesman said they're trying to persuade conservatives from across the country to pour money into a state that typically elects Democrats.

Sullivan has said he's not familiar with the committee and has condemned statements made by the group's leader that critics say are anti-gay.
