Tribal chair demands gambling commission disclosure

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - The chair of an Indian tribe planning to build a casino in southeastern Massachusetts wants the state gambling commission to disclose who advised it on whether to open the region to competing projects.

Mashpee Wampanoag chairman Cedric Cromwell made his request Thursday after the Massachusetts Gaming Commission indicated last week it was ready to end the tribe's exclusive development rights in the region.

Commission chairman Steve Crosby has already declined to identify the legislators and staffers he spoke with.

He says the commission is simply doing all it can to get the best information.

Commission members are concerned the tribal project would take too long and hold back the region. Cromwell says the commission is ignoring the potentially disastrous economic effects of bypassing the tribe.
