BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) - Boston Mayor Tom Menino underwent surgery Saturday after breaking his the smaller of the two bones in his lower leg, the latest in a series of health issues that have dogged the city's longest serving chief executive.
Spokeswoman Dorothy Joyce says Menino twisted his ankle on his way to an event Friday morning. He went back to his office, applied ice to the ankle and called his doctor when it began to swell.
Joyce said an X-ray revealed the fracture and surgery was needed to repair the leg.
The mayor's office released a statement Saturday morning saying Mayor Menino's surgery lasted less than an hour and there were no complications. He had a plate and screws put into place to repair the broken bone.
Mayor Menino will be in a walking boot as a result of the injury and will need to use crutches for a few months.
Menino recently announced he won't seek re-election.
