Joel Hope of Portland, Oregon may have become a critical part of the FBI's search for a suspect in the Boston marathon bombing.

An hour before the explosions, Hope was shooting video and taking pictures of his wife running the marathon. It's the pictures he snapped that could end up being critical evidence.

Hope spoke to FOX 29's Chris O'Connell in Boston Wednesday.

"I talked to the FBI last night (Tuesday), sat down with them, gave them all my pictures, my video and I think we are the only ones with that angle of the crowd scene before."

Hope tells FOX 29 he spent several hours Tuesday night poring over images with FBI agents. He says investigators were interested in one picture in particular; an image of the crowded finish line minutes before the attack.

In the photo, several people are seen with backpacks.

"We're seeing a guy with the black backpack on that looks very similar to what we saw carrying out," Hope said.

Hope and his wife were inside their hotel room at the time of the first explosion. They ran for safety then went back to the hotel roof. When they got there, Hope describes what looked like a "war zone" below.

It was on that same roof that Hope found what FOX 29 has now confirmed as the lid to one of the pressure cooker bombs. Hope says it was filled with nails and ball bearings that were used in the bombings.

He says the lid looked like a hub cap that was smoking. He says he gave the lid to an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms.

Hope says his trip to Boston has taken on a new meaning and a new purpose.

Monday's bombing killed three people and injured more than 170. The bombs were made from ordinary kitchen pressure cookers packed with explosives, nails and ball bearings, the Associated Press reported.

The FBI says no one has claimed responsibility.

Despite conflicting reports, federal and local investigators say no suspects are in custody.
