'Suspicious Fire' Closes High School In Delaware County

LANSDOWNE, Pa. -

Police say arsonists may be to blame for a two-alarm fire that ripped through a Delaware County high school.

It happened at around 4:30 a.m. Thursday at Penn Wood High School's Green Avenue campus in Lansdowne.

Police say someone pried open a back door and set one fire in a reception area. The other fire was reported to be in a classroom.

There's no word when students will be allowed back in the school.

The local fire chief called the damage extensive and expressed doubts on whether students would return to the building this school year.

The fires, which never met, were being called "very suspicious."

Firefighters from 13 departments were called to battle the fire.

Officials say both the Green Avenue and the Cypress Street campuses will be closed Thursday and Friday.

Residents told FOX 29's Steve Keeley that at 3 a.m. they saw one fire engine and it was quiet for about 40 minutes. Then, they heard a bunch of alarms. The residents said they never saw flames, but they did see some smoke.

The high school's front doors and many windows are now open to try to air out the building.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
