Boston plans for reopening Boston Marathon bombing scene

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - City officials say they are beginning the process of reopening to the public the six-block site around the scene of the Boston Marathon bombing.

Mayor Thomas Menino said on Sunday that once the scene is released by the FBI, the city will begin a five-phase process for reopening the area. The process will include environmental testing and a safety assessment of buildings in the area. The exact timetable for the reopening is unclear.

The city also plans to open what Menino called a "mobile city hall" to assist business owners.

The makeshift memorial to the bombing victims near the cordoned-off site will be temporarily relocated to Copley Square Park.

Boston police plan to return any personal items found at the scene that is not being kept as evidence in the investigation.
