Semi strikes, kills pedestrian on Near West Side

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A semi truck fatally struck a Pennsylvania woman Monday morning on the Near West Side.

The woman -- identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as 24-year-old Catherine Cong-Ye -- was crossing the road in the 800 block of West Randolph Street when the westbound semi struck her at 8:34 a.m., police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

Con-Ye, of the 1200 block of Northampton Street in State College, Pa., was pronounced dead on the scene at 8:48 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, which will perform an autopsy Tuesday.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
