FBI: Boston bombing suspects planned attack in NYC

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The brothers accused of bombing the Boston Marathon were planning to carry out a bombing in New York City, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly and Mayor Mike Bloomberg said Thursday.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev told FBI agents that after the carjacking outside of Boston, he and his brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev spontaneously decided to drive to Times Square to detonate their remaining explosives, Bloomberg said.

Kelly and Bloomberg said they learned of the plot from the FBI on Thursday.

The suspects had a pressure cooker bomb and five pipe bombs with them when they were headed to Times Square, Bloomberg said.

"We have no specific information about the targeting. The initial information was they were coming to party, then the intent to target," said Kelly.

"They discussed this while driving around in a Mercedes SUV that they hijacked after they shot and killed the officer at MIT," Kelly said. "That plan, however, fell apart when they realized that the vehicle they hijacked was low on gas and ordered the driver to stop at a nearby gas station."

The driver of a car they had car jacked was able to escape and alert authorities.

Tamerlan, 26, was killed in a shoot out with police.

Dzhokhar, 19, remains hospitalized and is now refusing to answer questions after 16 hours of interrogations.
