Illinois drivers weigh in on proposed highway speed limit increase

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Illinois lawmakers are considering raising the speed limit on highways and tollways to 70 miles per hour - a popular idea among Chicago drivers, but some are concerned that it could lead to more traffic accidents.

The proposed bill has already passed the State Senate.

There are a lot of strong opinions on the topic, but not from Governor Quinn. He's staying mum until the General Assembly completes action on the bill.

More speed studies still have to be done in the meantime, to make sure that safety would still be the top priority - even if the increase should pass.

Sponsors of the bill said other states have higher speed limits, so it would be better for business in Illinois if the state raised its limit too.

Highway safety agencies are against it. They said Illinois has a lower traffic fatality rate because our speed limit remains at 55 and 65. IDOT said of the 43 states with higher fatality rates, they have higher speed limits.

Some drivers said traffic is already hazardous, but others said, "Bring it on!"

If the bill passes into law, the speed limit change would take place on Jan. 1, 2014.
