Rochester plays host to big Earth Day celebration this weekend

ROCHESTER, Mich. (WJBK) -

The Michigan Earth Day Fest is happening this weekend in downtown Rochester.  It is one of the planet's largest Earth Day events with 150 exhibits.

From a soothing massage to eco-friendly art, the Michigan Earth Day Fest is a green celebration and a chance to explore.

The recycled LPs exhibit caught our eye right away.  Wendy Roberts is the creative mind behind the designs.

"I use every single part of the record and make recycled items.  I make purses, pocket mirrors, notebooks, clocks," she said.  "I like the fact that you can reuse things.  People don't play records as much anymore, so why not reuse them."

If food is more your thing, there is plenty of that, as well.  Plus the chance to grow your own and buy shares in a community garden near Lake Orion.

"Our community garden has 40 members, and we provide about 20,000 pounds of food that we split between those 40 families," said Ken Webster from Upland Hills CSA.

And what would our planet be without our feathered friends and our furry friends?  There is something for them, too.

"I make home baked dog treats.  They're all wholesome, no artificial flavoring, no preservatives," said Nancy Pelky, owner of Bone Jour Bakery.

There are clothing lines made from green materials and a host of products and services, even fun activities for kids, plus music and entertainment all to honor Mother Earth.

"We only have one Earth, so we're trying to think about sustainability, what can we do for the next generation?" said Dr. Kerrie Saunders.

The Michigan Earth Day Fest also features green and healthy living exhibits, presentations and programs.  It runs from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.  For more information, visit www.migreenteam.com/miedf.
