'Misha,' man allegedly tied to suspected terrorists, found living in RI

Posted: Updated:

(MyFoxBoston.com) – The mystery man named "Misha" who is allegedly tied to the men accused of carrying out attacks at the Boston Marathon has been found. His real name is Mikhail Allakhverdov.

The Los Angeles Times reports that federal investigators spoke to the so-called "Misha" at his home in West Warwick, Rhode Island last week.

The 39-year-old was tracked down by a writer for the independent New York Review of Books. He told the reporter that he was never Tamerlan Tsarnaev's Islamic teacher, but if he were, he would have made sure nothing like the bombings ever happened.

Misha said he had no contact with Bomber No. 1 since moving away from Boston three years ago. Some members of the Tsarnaev family say Misha was behind Tamerlan's change to extremist views. A Tsarnaev uncle said Tamerlan was ambivalent about his Muslim faith until he began talking to Misha.

Misha claimed in the interview that he voluntarily handed over computers and other items to the FBI and that they are prepared to clear him in any wrongdoing.

The FBI has not commented on the matter.

Another report has surfaced which suggests Tamerlan Tsarnaev's radical Islamic views began to form once his dream of a professional boxing career died.

According to the New York Times, Tamerlan had dreams of competing for the United States in the Olympics; however, his dreams ended in 2010 when amateur boxing rules changed and Tamerlan was not allowed to compete in a national Tournament of Champions because he was not an American citizen.

The Times article quotes people close to Tamerlan as saying he quickly gave up boxing after that and became less social.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed during a gunfight with police in Watertown while his younger brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, escaped in a stolen vehicle.

Tamerlan's cause of death has been determined, but has not been released because his body remains unclaimed at the State Medical Examiner's Office.
