ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WJBK) -

Ten years ago in April, life threw Diana Kern a curveball in the form of breast cancer.

"The older we get the more you hear the 'cancer' word, but when you're 40, you don't expect to hear it so it was very traumatic."

It was obviously not the path the successful businesswoman had imagined, but like millions of others, it was the hand she was dealt.

Fortunately for Kern, she lived just minutes from the University of Michigan's Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of the country's top treatment facilities. The doctors went to work immediately.

While Kern's doctors worked to attack the disease that had invaded her body, she found another way to combat the effects of breast cancer. And it involved another U-M team. "Part of my therapy, when I was bald and going through chemotherapy, was sitting out at softball games, watching the team."

The Wolverines are no ordinary softball team. Lead by head coach Carol Hutchins, they've won 15 of the past 20 Big Ten regular season titles.

For the past three years this dynasty program has transitioned from a need distraction for Kerns, to a driving force in the fight against breast cancer. To date, they've raised $250,000 for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer initiative through their softball academy.

Kerns attended the first academy three years ago. As she marks the 10-year anniversary of her diagnosis, she's preparing for year's event and inviting other to take part as well.

The softball academy is open to everyone ages 21 and over. No athletic ability is required. Just be prepared to have fun and experience the power of making a difference.
