Vt. man charged with stealing UMass laptops

Posted: Updated:

AMHERST, Mass. (AP) - Police at the University of Massachusetts have arrested a Vermont man they say was pilfering laptop computers from students at the Amherst campus' main library.

Police say 30-year-old Christopher Desjardin of Colchester, Vt., was arrested this week after a stakeout at the W.E.B DuBois Library.

He was identified as a suspect because he looked older than the students and was spotted in the building during previous thefts.

Deputy Police Chief Patrick Archbald tells The Daily Hampshire Gazette officers saw Desjardin appear to take an item and followed him to his vehicle. He was charged with larceny over $250, although police think he may be responsible for as many as a dozen thefts of unattended laptops.

Archbald warned students to protect valuables.

It was not clear if Desjardin had a lawyer.
