NBA player Collins receives hateful messages after `coming out`

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

For every positive message or tweet in support of Jason Collins' "coming out" on Monday, there has been an equal amount of hate towards the NBA player.

Many of the messages directed towards Collins, 34, involve homophobic slurs, religious statements, and even death threats.

In the Sports Illustrated article where Collins revealed he is gay, he said he doesn't expect everyone to embrace him.

The announcement also impacted former Green Bay Packers safety, Leroy Butler.

Butler tweeted, "congrats to Jason Collins" on Monday. Then, Tuesday night, he tweeted that a Wisconsin church had cancelled his speaking appearance due to his support of Collins.

Earlier this evening, Butler once again used social media to say that the church has apologized. No word yet on whether his speaking engagement has been rescheduled.
