NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A small stunt plane made an emergency landing on a highway in Babylon, Long Island, Thursday afternoon.

The plane went down on Route 231. The pilot was able to walk away unharmed.

David Windmiller, the stunt pilot, said he was forced to land after his engine seized up at about 2,200 feet.

"I found some space between some trucks. I got in under a power line. The truck that I was behind saw me in the rear view mirror and was breaking heavily. I didn't have enough traction on the ground yet so I wound up going over a bridge following him and was able to get enough traction … and pulled over on the side of the road.  I was at 2,200 feet when the engine exploded and it was 25 seconds before I landed," Windmiller told FOX 5 morning show Good Day NY.

The red, white and blue plane appeared intact on a grassy area next to the road, except for its propeller blades, which came apart when the engine stopped working, he said.

He was heading to Republic Airport, a few miles from where he went down, when the problems started.

Windmiller has been a professional stunt pilot since 1994. He is a former member of the United States Aerobatic Team.

He has performed several times at the New York air show at Jones Beach.
