Police: Robbery victim fends off attacker, suspect says he's the victim

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – A Roxbury man was arraigned April 24 in connection with an alleged assault and robbery in which he told police that he was actually the victim.

Torin Traynor, 27, was arraigned on charges of unarmed robbery, assault and battery, and two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for using a tile floor and a shod foot during the attack, prosecutors said.

Police in the Mission Hill area of Boston responded to a report of a fight on Tremont Street at about 11 p.m. on March 21 and found a man on nearby Calumet Street suffering from multiple cuts, according to prosecutors.

The man, later identified as Traynor, told police he had been attacked and robbed while using the ATM, prosecutors said. He was transported to Brigham and Women's Hospital for treatment.

Officers were then informed that another man, a 35-year-old Dorchester resident, was injured and needed help at a nearby restaurant. The man told police that, while he was withdrawing $20 from the ATM, a man took his money and began beating him. He was punched, kicked, and had his head slammed against the floor and windows.

During the attack, the victim said, he pulled out a box-cutter and cut the attacker in self-defense, eventually getting away and seeking refuge at a nearby T.G.I. Fridays.

The victim pointed Traynor out to witnesses, saying "He robbed me." Traynor was holding a black wallet at the time; witnesses took it from him and kept it at the scene for police.

Investigators met with Traynor again and found a $20 bill with apparent blood stains. They also looked at surveillance video from the bank that corroborated the victim's story, prosecutors said.

Traynor appeared in court and was released on his own recognizance. His next court date is June 6.
