Fred Lorenzen, 1965 Daytona 500 winner from Elmhurst, still a superstar

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Elmhurst's Fred Lorenzen dominated NASCAR in the 1960s. Nicknamed "The Golden Boy," he was one of Stock Car's first superstars.

In 1998, Lorenzen was named one of NASCAR's 50 greatest drivers. He remains among the greatest drivers and all-stars, like Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty.

Lorenzen's former crew chief said he could drive a race car better than anybody on the track.

FOX 32 sports anchor Lou Canellis sat down with the 1965 Daytona 500 winner, who is also featured in an Elmhurst Historical Museum's exhibit - it runs through May 19.
