Otis Nixon arrested on drug charges in Cherokee Co.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -

Cherokee County authorities say former Atlanta Braves outfielder Otis Nixon is facing drug charges after he was arrested over the weekend.

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office says a caller reported that Nixon's Dodge Ram truck was weaving in traffic on Interstate 575 northbound on Saturday.  Deputies pulled Nixon over on Airport Road, and he was given a field sobriety test, which they say he passed.

Deputies say they ended up finding what they believe was crack cocaine on Nixon and inside the truck.  Nixon has been charged with possession of cocaine and possession of a drug-related object.

According to the police report, Nixon told them the cocaine must have been left behind by his son. An officer said in the report that "Otis said he was always finding drugs and drug objects left by his son."

Authorities say a woman traveling with Nixon was not charged, and she was allowed to drive his vehicle home.

Nixon is being held in the Cherokee County Jail on a $11,880 bond.

In February, an undercover FOX 5 I-Team investigation exposed a scam Nixon was pulling on desperate families. He claimed his Otis Nixon Foundation could help get Georgia inmates released on early parole because he knew the governor and Parole Board chairman.

Several families complained to investigators
they gave Nixon as much as $1,000, but never got what he promised. It turned out that Nixon didn't even have an approved home to take parolees.
