NH man accused of killing stepson to serve 18 years in Greece

Posted: Updated:

NASHUA, N.H. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A New Hampshire man on the run for over two decades has been arrested in Greece for the 1989 murder of his 2-year-old stepson, James Chartier.

Investigators announced the arrest of Steven Kamberidis during a press conference Friday.

The FBI says Kamberidis was arrested by police in Greece in February 2013. The Athens Criminal Court affirmed his conviction for the murder of Chartier on April 29.

FBI officials say this is the first case in which a person already tried and convicted in the U.S. has been arrested and tried in Greece.

Chartier's family attended the press conference held in Nashua Friday. His uncle, Tim Grover, thanked law enforcement for their tireless efforts in seeking justice for his 2-year-old nephew.

Kamberidis was found guilty of murdering Chartier in May 1991. The former Nashua resident fled before a guilty verdict was read and remained on the lam for 22 years.

Kamberidis will serve 18 years in Greek custody.
