New Rutgers basketball coach Eddie Jordan doesn't have degree

Posted: Updated:

Rutgers University's official bio of new basketball coach Eddie Jordan indicates he graduated from the university in 1977.

But the university registrar's office said the former NBA player and coach never received a degree from Rutgers, though he earned 103 credit hours from 1973 to 1985.

"Eddie Jordan was inducted into the Rutgers Hall of Distinguished Alumni in 2004 and he has been a part of the Rutgers family since before 1977," Rutgers spokesman E.J. Miranda said in the statement. "His athletic skills and leadership and his professional accomplishments have been a source of pride for Rutgers for more than three decades. We are excited to have him as our men's basketball coach and we look forward to many winning seasons."

The degree discrepancy was first reported Friday by the sports website Deadspin.

Jordan told ESPN that he returned to Rutgers in 1985 to finish his coursework but never got a diploma because he didn't register properly.

"Some of the professors are still around and some are gone but they all know I was in class and did my work," Jordan said.

In an updated statement, Rutgers said the university made a mistake in reporting that Jordan earned a degree, but "neither Rutgers nor the NCAA requires a head coach to hold a baccalaureate degree."

Jordan was hired last month to replace Mike Rice. Rice was fired after video was made public showing him kicking and shoving players and yelling obscenities and anti-gay slurs at them. Two university administrators resigned over the scandal.
