Ex-fugitive pleads guilty in Ga. double-slaying

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - A man who fled overseas after a 2007 double-slaying in Columbus has pleaded guilty to two counts of murder.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports 30-year-old Michael Jason Registe will serve two life sentences simultaneously after agreeing to the plea deal Friday. His trial in the killings of 21-year-old Randy Newton Jr. and 20-year-old Bryan Kilgore had been scheduled to begin Monday. Both men were found shot in the head outside an apartment complex in July 2007.

Registe fled overseas and become 1 of the FBI's most-wanted fugitives. Authorities on the Caribbean island of St. Maarten captured Registe in August 2008. He was returned to the United States nearly a year later on condition that prosecutors would not seek the death penalty.

Registe will be eligible for parole in 2038.
