Storm takes down trees in Battery Park City

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Patrons inside a Battery Park restaurant received a scare when high winds knocked over several trees.

The cleanup was underway after five huge trees came crashing down during Saturday's storm in the Battery Park City section of Manhattan.  Luckily, no one was seriously hurt.

One of the trees that was uprooted fell into the outdoor seating area at the Merchants River House restaurant.

"It was scary, it was scary," Bob Aiello said.

Aiello says he was walking to the restaurant when he stopped to watch the storm move in over the Hudson River.

"I opened the umbrella to get less wet, then walked past that first tree and they fell around me,"  Aiello says.

He just barely missed getting hit.

"We were lucky. God looked out for us," said Aiello.

The 30 or so diners sitting outside at the restaurant were also lucky. The manager told Fox 5 News that workers moved them inside right before the trees came down.

"Very scary how it all came down and seeing all the trees across the furniture," said Nick Fusco, Merchants River House manager.

He says the damage is to their two outdoor seating areas. As quickly as the storm moved in, it was gone. People stopped by to survey the damage and take pictures as crews started cleaning up.

"Oh my God - it's like this area here with (Hurricane) Sandy and everything," said one customer. "My wife said we have to move."

There are no reports of major injuries. Fox 5 News reported that one woman was knocked down, probably by the wind, but refused medical attention.

Things are looking up for cute little Cami King. Not only is her cancer in remission, she also just got to meet Mickey, Minnie and Elmo in Times Square. But, if you can believe it, there's something else this 4-year-old is even more excited about: Times Square is going gold. The chairman of the Times Square Advertising Coalition announced the crossroads of the world is going to light up in gold to raise awareness for pediatric cancer research.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
