WAUKEGAN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A second man has denied killing a Zion man over the angle of his hat.

Jose Garcia, 18, of Mundelein pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder before Circuit Judge Daniel Shanes Thursday, May 9.

His co-defendant Jose Rebollar-Verara, 25, of Round Lake Park, denied first-degree murder charges at his arraignment last week.

The pair are accused of shooting Gabriel Gonzales, 19, of Zion, just after midnight March 10 in the parking lot at One Stop Food and Liquor Store in the 1000 block of Fairfield Road, Round Lake Beach.

Garcia and Rebollar-Verara mistook Gonzales for a gang member and criticized the way Gonzales was wearing his hat inside the liquor store.

Because a gun was used, each man faces an extended prison term if convicted. Rebollar-Verara faces 35 to 75 years in prison and Garcia faces 45 years in prison to life, Assistant State's Attorney Reginald Mathews said.

Rebollar-Verara is due back in court May 16. Garcia is due back in court May 30.

Both men are in custody at Lake County Jail in lieu of $3 million bonds.
