Funeral plans for popular Birmingham school teacher

Posted: Updated:
FRANKLIN, Mich. (WJBK) -

Funeral services for Harry Berkowtiz will be held Monday afternoon at the Hebrew Memorial Chapel in Oak Park.

He was killed Tuesday morning inside his home on Charles Lane in Franklin. Police say 33 year-old Thomas Ian Matthews shot and killed Berkowitz, then drove to his ex-girlfriend's house in Royal Oak, where he turned the gun on himself.

At West Maple Elementary where Berkowitz taught reading support, grief counselors are on hand for students and staff. He had been an elementary school teacher in the Birmingham district for more than 40 years.

He was single, with no children. Berkowtiz leaves behind a sister, as well as countless fellow faculty members and students who are certainly feeling his loss.

The family suggests those who wish to further honor the memory of Harry Berkotwitz may best do so by a means of contribution to "any charity of your choice."
