LOWELL, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) - A 2-month old boy from Lowell suffered critical injuries that authorities say were caused by his father.

Christopher Berry, 22, was arraigned Monday in Lowell District Court on a charge of assault and battery on a child causing substantial bodily injury. He is being held on $500,000 bail. In addition, Berry's bail on his pending cases was revoked.

Police responded to a city home on Saturday where they found the baby boy unresponsive.

The infant was brought to Lowell General and then transferred to Tufts Floating Hospital for Children in Boston. The boy is now in the custody of the Department for Children and Families.

Authorities determined the injuries were not accidental.

It was not clear if Berry had a lawyer for the case.

Barry is due back in court June 6 for a probable cause hearing.

According to the Lowell Sun, Berry is an Afghanistan war vet who has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Berry has a long history of run-ins with police. Since 2011, he has been charged with violently throwing his girlfriend out of their apartment, breaking and entering and larceny.

Berry also allegedly lured pigeons to a parking lot then drove his car through the flock, killing six birds. The animal cruelty case is still pending.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
