Deadly crash on Williamsburg Bridge

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

One person was killed and four injured in an early morning crash at the Willamsburg Bridge.

Police and fire officials say the one-car accident occurred at 3:55 a.m. Monday on the ramp on the Brooklyn side.

The 2003 Nissan Altima was traveling eastbound on the Williamsburg Bridge when the driver lost control of the vehicle at a turn striking a metal divider on the passenger side. The car continued to spin, eventually coming to a stop in oncoming traffic lanes. The driver then parked the vehicle at the Roebling Street exit, said police.

A 21-year-old woman was ejected from the backseat of the vehicle and was pronounced dead on the scene.

The injured including the 23-year-old driver were transported to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition, said police.

Charges are pending against the driver.

The police investigation shut down the ramp to the bridge from South 4th Street to the inbound lanes for several hours.

Outbound traffic was detoured to Broadway. All southbound Brooklyn-Queens Expressway traffic was forced to use the Manhattan Bridge.
