More than 2,500 guns were taken off Chicago streets so far in 2013, but the violence continues. Two people were fatally shot this past weekend, and at least seven others were wounded.

Police say they're making progress, despite the high numbers of victims of violent crime reported at the beginning of every week.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy announced Monday that his officers have recovered more than 2,500 guns so far this year.

McCarthy addressed the media in the Deering community, in the heart of the 9th district, where he said murders are down 45%. The superintendent spoke of murders being down by 90 overall in the city this year, to date.

Chicago police said "reducing" this kind of violence happens when guns are taken off the street, and local law enforcement turns to the community for help.

"We need people to step up and make that happen," McCarthy said. "If everybody stays indoors, close their doors and close the shutters and lets whatever happens on the street, happen on the street, then we're not going to be able to have those successes."

McCarthy added that the success they've had in reducing crime in the 9th district is thanks to the residents, and to officers going back to staying on specific beats.

The superintendent is pushing officers to go back to "community policing" to help both the officers and the residents on the South and West Side.
