Preventative Mastectomies: What You Need To Know

(FOX 11) Angelina Jolie's announcement in the New York Times that she underwent a double mastectomy as a move to prevent breast cancer sent a shockwave throughout the world.

Jolie says she carries the "faulty" BRCA1 gene. She writes that the risk of developing cancer varies, but doctors estimated she had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer.

Breast cancer surgeon Dr. Deanna Attai from the Center For Breast Care in Burbank talked to Studio 11 LA about breast cancer gene mutations and preventative mastectomies.

--Mutation associated with 85% chance of developing breast or ovarian cancer
--Preventive mastectomy reduces breast cancer risk to 1-3%
--Recovery from surgery can be long and complicated
