Polito's Take: Something's fishy at the Quabbin

Posted: Updated:

Back in 1984, no one would have been concerned about some college kids hanging out at the Quabbin Reservoir around midnight. I know that because I may or may not have been there with friends and it could be alleged that we were doing a case study - 12 ounces at a time.

On September 11th, 2001, State Police declared it was last call at the "Rezee." Ironically, I returned periodically to the Quabbin for some sober reporting on the increased security measures. Most experts agree it would be nearly impossible to poison the water, but there's no guarantee.

Here's what we know. The FBI and State Police are now investigating seven people who were wandering around the shores of the Quabbin Reservoir just after midnight on Tuesday. Police reports do not contain any indication there was drinking or some other type of mood altering activities. They told police they had stopped to look at the reservoir because it was of interest to them. They said they were chemical engineers and had graduated from UMass Amherst.  There were five men and two women. They live in Amherst, Cambridge, Sunderland, Northampton and New York City. Police did not release any information on their immigration status, except to say they are from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Singapore. They were summonsed to court for a trespassing charge and we'll have to wait until then to learn their names. So far, there are no indications that this has anything to do with terrorism.

Today is the one month anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings. I could not withstand the physical demands of running 26.2 miles, but I can jump to conclusions. I will reserve judgment until I know more of the facts. My reporter instincts tell me that this could either be something small and simple or big and stinky. Stay tuned.
