NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A woman Hofstra University student was shot and killed during an apparent home-invasion robbery at an off-campus house shared by several students in Uniondale, Long Island. The suspect also died in the incident.

The university identified the student as Andrea Rebello, 21, a junior studying public relations.

"The Hofstra University community is deeply saddened by the loss of Andrea Rebello," Vice President for Student Affairs Sandra S. Johnson said in a statement. "All flags will be flown at half-staff in honor of Ms. Rebello's memory. This is a difficult day for all of us."

Nassau County Police said they responded to a robbery call at 213 California Ave. a block from the Hofstra campus at about 3:30 a.m. on Friday.

Shots rang out shortly after police got to the scene. The suspect was also shot dead.

It is not clear who shot who, police said during a briefing Friday morning. Cops are investigating if Rebello was killed by police gunfire or the invader's weapon.

It was unclear how many shots were fired.

A gunman was wearing a black ski mask when he knocked on the door and then forced his way into the home shared by three females and a male, according to police.

Rebello was from Tarrytown, N.Y. Her twin sister, Jessica, was among the women inside the home at the time of the shooting. She was not harmed, officials said.

The gunman allowed another woman to leave the house to get money for him from an ATM. But called 911.

Dozens of police and detectives were at the scene and cordoned off the area.

Fox 5 News reported that several sorority sisters lived in the home.

The last day of final exams were scheduled for Friday. Some students were seen crying near the shooting scene as news of the incident spread.

The university had no immediate comment on the incident.

The giant African snail damages buildings, destroys crops and can cause meningitis in humans. But some people still want to collect, and even eat, the slimy invaders. The Agriculture Department is trying to stop them. Since June, department authorities have seized more than 1,200 live specimens of the large snails, all of them traced back to someone in Georgia who was selling them illegally.

The rip current risk remains high along the New Jersey and New York coastlines. Some beaches were open to the public but closed to swimmers. The National Weather Service issued a High Surf Advisory and Rip Current Statement for the area beaches because of the effects of Hurricane Cristobal, which is expected to track south and east of the Jersey shore through Thursday.
