Mass. Senate hopefuls spar on gun control ad

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) — Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Gabriel Gomez defended his stance on gun control Friday and lashed out at Democratic Rep. Edward Markey for alluding to the Connecticut school massacre in a new TV ad that criticized Gomez's gun stand.

Markey's ad notes that Gomez opposes a ban on federal assault weapons and on high-capacity magazines "like the ones used in the Newtown school shooting."

Gomez, a former Navy SEAL, called the reference to the shooting that killed 20 children and six adults "below the low."

The Republican said he supports expanded background checks for weapons sold at gun shows and online.

Markey, meanwhile, told WCVB-TV during an interview airing Sunday he plans to release six years of tax returns "in the very near future." Gomez has been pressing Markey to release the returns.
