Police: Man conducted multi-state fraud scheme

PARK RIDGE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Police in northwest suburban Park Ridge say a 63-year-old Chicago man conducted a fictitious business that defrauded people in at least four states and they are now looking for additional victims.

David Ray Wooten of the 2600 block of West Berwyn established a fictitious company in Park Ridge, a statement from Park Ridge police said. He then conducted business transactions with his victims, taking possession of their vehicles, sports memorabilia, cash and artwork, without providing the agreed-upon payment.

In addition, Wooten would befriend people, often assuming the name of a previous victim, to establish credibility, according to police.

Park Ridge police investigated Wooten for months until they were able to identify, locate and arrest him in the 6500 block of West Diversey Avenue in Chicago on March 7, police said.

He has been charged with one count of Class 2 felony theft, three counts of Class 3 felony theft and one count Class A misdemeanor theft. Wooten is being held at Cook County Jail on $20,000 bond, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office. His next court date was scheduled for May 23 in Skokie.

During the investigation, detectives tracked Wooten's activities to at least four states including Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Missouri.

Because a number of other local agencies have identified Wooten as a possible suspect in crimes as far back as 2007, police believe there may be another 100 victims throughout the Midwest. Anyone who feels that they may have been a victim should call Park Ridge police at (847) 318-5252.
