Gas main break prompts evacuations in Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Authorities in Cambridge gave the all clear Monday afternoon following a gas main break which prompted evacuations and street closures near Kendall Square.

According to the Cambridge Police Dept. Twitter account, the break happened at Cambridge Center, and all buildings near 5 Cambridge Center were evacuated.

Ames Street, Main Street and Broadway in Kendall Square were also closed. MBTA police said MBTA service was held at Harvard Square and Park Street.

Police advised people to avoid the area while they cleared the incident and waited for the smell of gas to dissipate.

At about 1:30 p.m., authorities allowed all remaining evacuees to return to their buildings.
