Coach allegedly tells Little Leaguer to punch teammate

OCONEE COUNTY, Ga. -

Sheriff's investigators are looking into reports that a Little League coach told a player to punch a teammate to test a chest protector.

Over the weekend, a 13-year-old ball player in the Oconee County Little League was wearing a chest protector under his jersey. According to the sheriff's report, his coach, Wes Geddings, said, "Let's see how tough that is," and told another boy to hit him.

The team had just finished playing when parents say one player held the boy's arms behind his back and another teammate hit him, knocking him to the ground.

The boy was briefly unconscious.

League officials said that the coach has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. Geddings is also a county employee.

"He's a good guy and it would be hard for me believe that he had evil intent in his heart, but the other people are good people too and I don't think they'd make something up either," said Chief Lee Weems of the Oconee County Sheriff's Office.

Roy Woods is also a coach and said that Geddings should never have said it, even if he'd been joking.

"It seems really crazy to me -- you would instruct a kid to hit another kid to test out a piece of equipment," said Woods. "You gotta keep them safe and you got to teach them how to play the right way. Teaching your kid that it's OK to punch another kid, that's not the right thing to do."

The boy was taken to the emergency room to be checked out. He is OK.

Weems says his parents say they don't want to press criminal charges, but they do want the league to determine the best action to take.
