Mass. residents warned of black bear seen in towns

Posted: Updated:

WESTON, Mass. (AP) — Police are urging residents to look out for a black bear after one was spotted in Weston and Lincoln.

Officials say it's possible the bear is looking for food, and police recommended that residents take down bird feeders and remove other sources of food from their yards.

The Boston Globe reports (bo.st/YV5SLd) that police received reports of a medium-sized black bear, more than 100 pounds, in Weston on Monday. A bear also was seen in Lincoln on Sunday.

Bears have been out of hibernation for weeks. Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife spokesman Marion Larson says it's likely that a young male bear has been forced out by and older female and is trying to set up his own territory.
