Attleboro rehires contractor despite lunch flap

Posted: Updated:

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) — The city of Attleboro has renewed its contract with the food services company that created a national ruckus when its workers denied lunch to about two dozen middle school students whose account balances were in arrears.

The school committee on Monday approved a one-year contract with New York-based Whitsons Culinary Group.

Whitsons officials apologized after cafeteria workers either refused Coelho Middle School students meals or told them to throw their lunches away in April. Parents said some students cried.

The company said the employees were acting on their own and fired four workers. One school official was also demoted.

The Sun Chronicle ( ) reports that little mention was made of the incident at Monday's meeting, although one member asked if the company had retrained employees.
