Dozens arrested in Roxbury drug probe

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) -- More than two dozen people were taken into custody Tuesday morning as part of a police investigation into an alleged drug-trafficking operation in Roxbury.

The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office says a total of 14 defendants were indicted by the Suffolk County Special Grand Jury and were expected to be arraigned throughout the day Tuesday in Suffolk Superior Court. Several others were scheduled for arraignment in Roxbury District Court and a few others were charged in U.S. District Court.

The district attorney's office says a total of 30 people were in custody by 12 p.m. and that more arrests were expected throughout the day. The arrests are the result of what the district attorney calls "extensive" surveillance, controlled buys, and two months of testimony before a grand jury.

A spokesperson for District Attorney Daniel F. Conley says the arrests are part of a "long-term investigation targeting drug offenses and suppressing violent crime in the H-Block area and surrounding streets."

A police department spokeswoman says suspects include gang members and authorities are obtaining search warrants for several houses in the neighborhood.

Law enforcement officials are expected to hold a 4 p.m. press conference on the investigation. Stay with FOX 25 and MyFoxBoston.com as we learn more.
