Chris Lighty's mother seeks grand jury probe

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

For the first time since the death under mysterious circumstances of hop music mogul Chris Lighty nine months ago, his grieving mother is breaking her silence. She is calling for a grand jury to investigate what really happened and get answers to some key questions that won't go away.

"I do not under any circumstance believe that my son killed himself," said Jessica Brooks, Lighty's mother, in her first TV interview.

Lighty guided the careers of superstars Mariah Carey, rapper and entrepreneur 50 Cent, music and TV star LL Cool J, Diddy, Busta Rhymes, and more. He died August 2012 from what the New York City medical examiner ruled an "apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound" at the home he shared with his wife, Veronica, in the Riverdale section of the Bronx.

"To die in front of his youngest son's swing in the backyard is unbelievable," Brooks said. "My son loved his children. He would not have left that kind of memory for him."

Lighty's funeral brought out some of the biggest names in the music business. But there was no closure for many, including his close friend and business partner, 50 Cent. 50 told me exclusively in September why he was bankrolling an independent investigation.

"To be honest with you, there was too much planning for the future to just accept that he just shot himself," 50 Cent said at that time.

The private investigation then hit a major roadblock. Since Lighty's death was ruled an apparent suicide, key tests were not performed, said Lighty's long time attorney and friend, Scott Leemon.

"We have learned that the gunshot residue test was never done," he said. "But the good news is they did take the sample in the medical examiner's office, but it was never tested."

Leemon said that test would lead to the answer of whether Lighty had actually held the gun. Also in question is the gun itself. Leemon said that was never tested for DNA.

"I think a grand jury investigation has to be started, some subpoenas need to be issued and we need to go forward with this," he said.

Brooks said she cannot get closure until she gets answers. She said she wants a full investigation, and has started an on line petition to get the Bronx District Attorney's Office to convene a grand jury. She said she feels she owes it to her son, who did so much for their family.

"He made it possible for me to retire, he helped me build a house... a good son," she said.

The Bronx D.A. sent Fox 5 a statement saying that the office will not pursue a grand jury inquiry. The D.A. said the medical examiner has ruled the death a suicide based on the police investigation and that there is no indication a crime has been committed.
