Duggan certified for the ballot in Detroit mayoral race

Mike Duggan will remain on the ballot in the race for mayor of Detroit despite allegations he violated city election law.

There were plenty of Duggan supporters at Thursday's meeting, so you can imagine their reaction when the Detroit Election Commission made their decision.

The commission voted 2 to 1 to certify Duggan for the ballot.

Tom Barrow had alleged that Duggan was in violation because he filed his paperwork two weeks prior to reaching the one year residency requirement. However, the commission clearly did not side with Barrow.

"I started off as an election law lawyer. I never in my life heard of somebody being excluded from the ballot for filing their petitions too early," Duggan said. "This was the correct result. We never had any doubt that this was the way that it was going to come out, and now we're going to get back focused on the campaign."

"They've put off all of the working people and made a new law for the rich man. This is a clear case of where the rich get treated one way and the ordinary people, the working people, the ordinary, everyday residents get treated another way. What we put in is correct. They've put people off the ballot. They remain off the ballot. That certainly is not fair based on the same law," Barrow remarked.

Barrow said he is considering a further appeal of the issue. Robert Davis has also said he will be filing a lawsuit.

Charles Pugh was the only one who voted against certifying Duggan, but he did say that he believed Duggan was a great candidate.

The primary election for Detroit mayor is scheduled for August 6.
