For the first time since 2007, a major grocery chain is opening its doors in Detroit. Whole Foods Market can't wait to open their doors on June 5.

"Last night I couldn't sleep. I just sat up all night really just thinking about the store and just the whole journey and when it really started. It's been over a decade for some of us wanting this vision to come forward," says Larry Austin. "So being eight days out, I'm just so excited to get this baby open," says Larry Austin.

Over 70 percent of the workers are Detroit residents.

"We're asking for Detroit to support us, so it's only right that we pay that back and make sure we hire team members from the community. It's really important to us. We want to make sure it's a community first store," Austin says.

Signage hangs above the aisles acknowledging partnerships with the community. The even have their own artist on site and plenty of other amenities that make Whole Foods Detroit unique.

"We have an awesome construction team, design team and marketing team that works together to come up with the concepts. We gave them the feedback what the community wanted out of the store, and they went in and they did their thing," Austin says.

There may be a perception about Whole Foods that they cater to a particular type of clientele, but they want you to know that this store will be very much community based for Detroiters.

Whole Foods offers free onsite classes for anyone that wants to learn more about making healthier food choices that fit within your budget.

"This store is for Detroiters all over the city, and it's important to us that this store fulfills that obligation or that missing slot. It's really important to us that the city understands that this is a store for Detroit, and we'll keep working hard until we make sure we hit that goal, if we feel we haven't hit it yet," Austin says.
