Dem. Markey: I could have given more to charity

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) — Democratic U.S. Senate hopeful Edward Markey is saying that he could have done better in recent years when it came to giving money to charity.

During the past eight years, Markey reported more than $18,200 in charitable donations on his tax returns. That's just under $2,300 on average each year.

In 2012, Markey reported giving $3,500 to charity. That was a jump from 2011, when he reported giving $1,900.

As a member of the U.S. House or Representatives, Markey makes about $150,000 annually.

Asked while campaigning Tuesday if he could have given more, Markey said he "probably could have done better."

Markey is facing Republican hopeful Gabriel Gomez in the June 25 special U.S. Senate election. The two are hoping to fill the seat left vacant by John Kerry's resignation to become secretary of state.
