Paraplegic Mother Of 2 Up For 'Best Mom On Wheels'

MILLVILLE, N.J. -

Anyone who's had kids knows how exhausting a toddler can be. Throw a 4-year-old into the mix, and a parent's job can be as hard as almost any job on the planet.

Now, imagine doing that job from a wheelchair.

Nina Bobryk-Sheppard is a paraplegic -- she can't move her legs. But she will not let it stop her from playing with her kids at a handicap-accessible park near her Millville home.

Nina is only 23-years-old. But she possesses the maturity and wisdom of a woman three times her age.

"It is hard," says Nina. "I give every mom respect, whether you're a handicapped mom or not. Because it is difficult, especially with small children. That's what I said, just look at all the good things you have, and don't look at what you don't have... that keeps you pushing."

Nina was in a car accident on Nov. 10, 2011. The accident broke all her ribs, collapsed her lungs, injured her brain, and severed her spine.

Nina easily could have died. When she woke up from a coma paralyzed, no one would have blamed her if she fell into a deep depression. But she wouldn't allow it because she has two young children to raise.

"If I didn't have them, I feel like I would just be a miserable mess in my chair, not wanting to do anything, upset at the world that I can't walk right now."

Despite her disability, and the tight spaces inside her house, she still changes her 2-year-old's diaper. She's trained him to get on and off the kitchen table by himself. No one helps her. She doesn't need it. She still does what every other stay-at-home mom does.

"I'm here with them pretty much all day... I do the cooking, I do the cleaning, I shower them, I bathe them."

As for the accident that left her in a wheelchair?

"It's changed me for the better, I can honestly say. I actually look back at my accident and I should be upset about it, but I'm actually thankful."

Nina is a top-10 finalist for "Best Mom on Wheels," a contest sponsored by the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. You can vote for her on the site.

"I work hard at being a good mom," says Nina. "And to actually get the recognition for it is amazing."
