Snyder: Talk of DIA artwork sell-off 'premature'

MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (WJBK) -

Governor Rick Snyder is trying to turn down the volume on the DIA dilemma as fears of an artwork sell-off are running high.

While the governor can't promise the art won't be hawked, he claims it is premature since the city is not in Chapter 9 bankruptcy court.

"Let's not get premature about this whole discussion," Snyder said. "If it was in Chapter 9, there are a whole series of steps that include recognizing that it's not about maximizing dollars and cents, but also what's for the good of the citizens and the public."

Snyder has found an ally in Detroit City Council Member Ken Cockrel, Junior.

"I think people might be panicking a little too early about this," he said.

The Snyder administration contends the emergency manager on his own cannot sell-off the artwork, and the state treasurer reassures everybody he doesn't think the auction will ever happen.

"I think it'd be pretty unprecedented if it happened," said Andy Dillon.

But again, there is no guarantee. Meanwhile, all the chatter about this is hurting the governor from a political standpoint, according to Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano.

"People that are active in that community naturally tend to probably be more in Republican politics, tend more to be consistent with the governor. So I think a lot of them are angry right now," he said.

Meanwhile, the Senate Republican leader has introduced legislation to make sure the DIA art cannot be sold.

"It's pretty close. What we've done is created a lawyer of protection against these kinds of assets being sold off," said Sen. Randy Richardville.
