LIVONIA, Mich. (WJBK) -

The storms that rolled through metro Detroit Thursday were powerful enough to knock down a lot of trees in one neighborhood in southwest Livonia.

Large, mature trees were either snapped or blown over in an area near Joy and Hix roads new Newburgh and Ann Arbor Trail.

Livonia Mayor Jack Kirksey went door to door in the neighborhood checking damages and doing welfare checks.

"I think it's an odd type of a wind sheer that just hit a few blocks here," Kirksey said. "I've been driving around the rest of Livonia and talking with the police and firefighters, and it's just a small area here was unusually hit hard by those winds."

"It seemed to blow up really quickly. My daughter kind of gave me a warning. She was listening to the news, and no sooner did she do that, she said, 'I'm coming downstairs. This doesn't look good.' And she did, and I kind of stood by the front door and I looked out and I actually saw the tree go down," said Susie Yangouyian.

She was one of many people home when the storm hit hard at 5:30 p.m.

"It was very windy. Everything that was going on was going horizontal. Everything was going from like east to west, and it was very hard to see. It was very foggy and difficult to see," Yangouyian said.

What did she think when she saw the tree go down?

"Thank goodness it went in that direction and it didn't come towards the house," Yangouyian said.

Neighbors counted 18 mature trees over several blocks that either snapped or were blown over.

When you survey the damage, it's one of those significant storms that causes you to scratch your head and wonder how did we escape with no one seriously injured or even worse?

"That's exactly what we've heard, too, from both my police and fire, which is very, very fortunate. We're blessed we can get around and repair what's happened and make sure everybody's safe, but the fact that no one got hurt, we've been blessed," Kirksey said.

The mayor said they will continue working until they get all the damage cleaned up.

There was also damage to some garages and a couple of homes.
