Where do you do your best thinking?
In weather like this, I like to take a ride on my motorcycle. It's a 1990 Harley Davidson Heritage Softail Classic. It's old, but it's a great ride. Maybe your thing is someplace like the beach. You're free from distractions and relaxing. I find my brain does its best work in those conditions.
Fortunately for me, I have another advantage. I also work in a newsroom that's packed with very smart, focused and creative people. Being in that environment stimulates the intellect. The combined news experience and reporting instincts of these individuals are phenomenal. They also take their responsibilities very seriously. They do not run from one story to the next. They follow stories, they advance stories, and their reporting also makes news.
For example, we've been on the state's welfare fraud scandal for a very long time. We have put difficult questions to the people in charge. Long after other news organizations have moved on, we're still digging in. That's our job, accountability. We're accountable to you and we make elected officials accountable. We're not going to drop the welfare fraud story even as other news demands our attention and resources.
Gov. Deval Patrick is just like any other politician. They all exploit our short attention spans. When something happens that makes them look bad, they hunker down and try to ride out the storm. They know another story will soon eclipse theirs and the public's focus will turn to something else. Let me give you an example. I began this commentary talking about where I do my best thinking. Do you remember? Don't look up.
Good job if you remembered. If you didn't, don't worry, we'll keep on top of things for you.
