DUXBURY, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Duxbury Beach will be closed from June 7 to July 15 due to nesting birds.
The Town of Duxbury announced the closure Tuesday due to 18 endangered Piping Plover nests.
The town said it is usually able to rope areas off and hire personnel to manage the bird nesting, but this year the nests were scattered too far away from each other.
The beach is expected to reopen on or around July 15 after the birds have left. The resident pedestrian beach and parking lot will remain open to permitted resident vehicles.
The town said Piping Plovers are protected under the Endangered Species Act and are afforded such special consideration.
