Only On Fox: Another Cabbie Shot, Ramsey Meets With Cab Drivers To Discuss Safety

Posted: Updated:

"I wouldn't be here if I didn't have to do it,"

Cab drivers across the city like Steve Tyler are on edge after another cabbie was robbed and shot overnight. This time it was a 53 yr old cab driver in Germantown who was held up at gunpoint inside his cab and shot in the arm at Chew Avenue and Hortter Street.

"Being a cab driver in Philadelphia is like the second most dangerous job next to being a police officer," Tyler told Fox 29.

The cab driver tried to drive himself to the hospital, but police saw his car weaving and raced him to Einstein Hospital.. The gunman got away. Police sources say this is the third cab driver robbed and shot in a week. Two so called "hack" cabbies were stuck up and shot in the 24th and 25th districts last week.

"When you walk out of the house, you know something could possibly happen," Tyler explained.

The latest shooting come just 3 weeks after 33 yr. old cab driver Hafiz Safaraz was murdered.   A fare got out of his cab in Cobbs Creek and opened fire through the passenger window, killing Safaraz. He left a wife and 7 yr old daughter behind.

"We just want to make sure we take whatever steps we can to keep them safe. It's a tough job," Commissioner Charles Ramsey told Fox 29.

Tuesday afternoon, cab drivers met with Commissioner Ramsey to discuss better ways to protect cabbies, including a new on-board camera system now being installed in All City Cab Company cabs like this one.

"It's a link with the satellite and everything will be recorded in our office," said a supervisor for All City Cab Co. "Plus we have a chip in there. When you sit in the cab it snaps your photo. It is very important for the safety of the drivers, that's why we are trying to introduce this camera."

There was no protective shield between the driver and the gunman in the overnight shooting. Detectives processed the cab for the gunman's finger prints. They're also looking for surveillance video of the shooting.

There are no new leads in the murder of cab driver Hafiz Safaraz.
