Man climbs in Decatur apartment, attacks girl

Posted: Updated:
DECATUR, Ga. -

A 10-year-old said that a man climbed into her Decatur apartment and tried to attack her as she slept on a couch. Police believe the suspect they're looking for is responsible for a similar crime in the same complex.

Keitha Cooks said that she heard her daughter scream just before 4:30 a.m. on Monday at Marquis Ridge Apartments.  Cooks said that the man had exposed himself and was performing lewd sex act in front of her daughter. The man told the girl that he would shoot her if she yelled.

"She fought him and she screamed and she said he ran out of the house," said Cooks.

Police combed the apartment complex off of Covington Highway on Monday evening in search of clues.

Ashley Murray said that a man entered her apartment through an open window on May 31 and committed the same lewd crime.

DeKalb County police believe the same man is responsible in both incidents.

Cook said that she is frustrated that she had never heard about the initial crime and said that the memo that the apartment complex released about her daughter's encountered failed to detail how serious the crime was.

"I feel like this wouldn't have happened had we been made alert of what is going on where we stay," said Cook. "Everybody could have been on alert. My daughter wouldn't have been sleeping downstairs."

An apartment complex manager has not returned calls for comment from FOX 5.

DeKalb County police said they are urging people to close and lock windows to their homes.
