UMass center warns of possible data breach

Posted: Updated:

AMHERST, Mass. (AP) — The University of Massachusetts is informing nearly 1,700 clients of its Center for Language, Speech and Hearing that private data, including Social Security numbers, may have been compromised when a computer workstation was infected by a malicious software program.

The information put at risk also included addresses, names of health insurers, primary health care or referring doctors.

Information specialists on the Amherst campus found no evidence that private patient data was actually taken from the workstation.

Dan Gerber, associate Dean of the School of Public Health and Health Sciences, advises clients to pay particular attention to "any unusual activity with respect to your health insurance information to limit the likelihood of misuse" of the information.

The center offers clinical services for people with communications disorders or delays.
